More than a game console!

MAKERbuino is not just a gaming console. It’s a tool that lets you brush your skills and knowledge and obtain new ones. In the process of making the MAKERbuino, you’ll have to solder, play with electronics, program microcontrollers, and much more. But wait, assembling the MAKERbuino is just the beginning: make a cool retro game, 3D print your custom case, hack the console, add an extra analog stick, control your quadcopter or turn it into a GSM enabled cellphone… make your MAKERbuino unique.

Emhpasis is on the DIY aspect, not the hardware specifications

Although MAKERbuino’s specifications may appear miserable when compared to your PC or smartphone, this little device allows you to program games, hack and mod hardware and software in its core and it will keep you busy for quite some time. In fact, it’s capabilities will keep even the experienced makers busy. Nevertheless, since it’s based on Arduino, MAKERbuino is also easy enough for beginners to start with.
MAKERbuino shares the same library and games gallery with the Gamebuino project and is fully compatible with the software written for the Gamebuino. Numerous tutorials, a large community and a vast open source game library with plenty of examples will help you enter the world of STEM through fun.

People tend to ask “why is the screen monochrome and low-res” or “why do you only have 16MHz of CPU”. The goal here is to make a cheap, open source Gameboy like DIY gaming device. We tend to emphasize the Do-It-Yourself aspect, not the specifications. As a plus, MAKERbuino’s retro hardware will bring out the nostalgia and provide you with the genuine retro experience.

  •  Display: Nokia 5110 84x48 monochrome graphic LCD /w white backlight (adjustable with a built in potentiometer)
  •  Sound: 0.5W speaker with 4-channel audio generation, 3.5mm headphone connector, hardware volume control
  •  Input: 7 pushbuttons with replaceable button caps (D-pad + ABC buttons)
  •  Storage: 32kB of FLASH program memory, 2kB of RAM, up to 2GB SD card for loading and saving programs (HEX files) and data
  •  Communication: serial UART port, i2c, SPI
  •  Battery: single cell LiPo, 3.7V, 900mAh, charged with your regular micro USB smartphone charger
  •  Dimensions: cca. 13cm x 6cm x 2.5cm (depending on the casing, hacks, mods, expansions…)
